Unveiled at CES, the new model combines a higher-resolution display with a lower price—two changes that, taken together, signal a broader shift in how augmented reality hardware is being positioned for consumers, gamers, and mobile professionals.

    For Xreal Inc., an early pioneer in wearable AR displays, the 1S is not about chasing premium headsets or futuristic promises. Instead, it reflects a pragmatic strategy: deliver incremental but meaningful improvements while lowering the barrier to adoption in a market that remains price-sensitive and fragmented.

    What Xreal Announced at CES

    At the Consumer Electronics Show, Xreal Inc. introduced the Xreal 1S as an upgrade to its previous entry model, the Xreal One. The most notable technical improvement is a bump in video resolution to 1200p, up from 1080p, delivering sharper visuals and improved clarity for video playback, gaming, and productivity tasks. While the jump may appear modest on paper, it addresses one of the most common criticisms of affordable AR glasses: softness in text and fine details.

    Equally significant is the pricing decision. The Xreal 1S is priced at $449, undercutting the $499 launch price of its predecessor. In a consumer electronics market where prices for advanced spatial computing hardware often exceed four figures, the reduction sends a clear message about Xreal’s priorities.

    The design also gets a subtle refresh. The 1S introduces a blue finish, moving away from the brand’s signature black frames. While largely cosmetic, the change reinforces Xreal’s positioning of the product as wearable tech rather than experimental hardware.

    How the Xreal 1S Works—and Why That Matters

    The Xreal 1S augmented reality glasses project a large virtual display directly into the user’s field of view. Unlike standalone headsets, the glasses do not include an internal battery or onboard computing. Instead, they rely on a wired connection to external devices such as smartphones, laptops, and supported gaming handhelds.

    This design choice keeps the glasses lightweight and portable while reducing cost and complexity. Users do not need to manage charging cycles or firmware updates for a separate computing unit. From a business standpoint, it also allows Xreal to focus its engineering resources on optics and display quality rather than processors and thermal management.

    The trade-off is that the experience is more limited than fully immersive headsets. The field of view is narrower, and the sense of enclosure is minimal.     One of the most consequential developments tied to the Xreal 1S is not the glasses themselves, but an accessory designed to solve a compatibility problem.

    Nintendo Co Ltd has restricted direct video output access on its upcoming Switch 2 console, limiting the functionality of third-party display devices. This move complicates the use of AR glasses for portable gaming—a key use case for Xreal’s products.

    To address this, Xreal introduced the Neo accessory, a $99 two-in-one device that functions as both a battery pack and a video hub. When connected between the console and the glasses, the Neo successfully passes the video feed to the Xreal 1S, enabling private, portable gameplay.

    From a consumer perspective, this workaround expands the utility of the glasses. From a business perspective, it highlights the growing influence platform owners have over hardware ecosystems. Xreal has acknowledged that Nintendo could potentially block this workaround in the future, underscoring the fragility of accessory-based solutions.

    The Neo’s price is set to increase to $119 after early February, suggesting Xreal expects meaningful demand from early adopters.

    Positioning Against Premium AR and XR Headsets

    The Xreal 1S augmented reality glasses occupy a distinctly different category than premium headsets such as Apple Inc.’s Vision Pro or Samsung Electronics Co Ltd’s upcoming Galaxy XR. Those devices aim to deliver fully immersive spatial computing experiences with advanced sensors, operating systems, and app ecosystems. They also come with significantly higher price tags and bulkier form factors.

    Xreal’s glasses, by contrast, resemble conventional eyewear. They sacrifice immersion for portability and affordability. The video quality and field of view are not comparable to high-end headsets, but neither is the cost.

    This distinction matters for consumers weighing practical use cases over novelty. For watching movies on a plane, extending a laptop display while traveling, or gaming privately in public spaces, lightweight AR glasses may offer a more realistic value proposition than full headsets.

    Why Xreal Lowered the Price

    The decision to reduce the price of the Xreal 1S reflects broader market dynamics in consumer AR. Adoption has been slower than early forecasts suggested, partly due to cost and unclear use cases. By lowering the entry price while improving core specifications, Xreal is betting that incremental improvements can drive wider acceptance.

    From a strategic standpoint, affordable hardware also helps expand the installed user base, which is critical for attracting developers, accessory partners, and platform collaborators. Even without a proprietary app ecosystem, a larger audience strengthens Xreal’s negotiating position within the broader AR landscape.

    The Role of Google and Project Aura

    While the Xreal 1S targets the entry market, the company is also pursuing more advanced hardware through Project Aura, developed in collaboration with Alphabet Inc.’s Google. That initiative aims to deliver standalone AR glasses running Android XR, supported by a tethered battery pack.

    Google has stated that its first smart glasses built around the Gemini artificial intelligence assistant will ship this year, although no release date has been confirmed for Project Aura specifically.

    This dual-track approach—premium development alongside affordable products—mirrors strategies used by other consumer tech companies. Entry-level devices generate volume and brand familiarity, while advanced models test the future of the category.

    Why This Matters for Businesses and Investors

    For businesses, the Xreal 1S illustrates how AR hardware is evolving into a more practical tool rather than a speculative experiment. Lower-priced devices with incremental improvements are easier to justify for training, remote collaboration, and mobile productivity use cases.

    For investors, the launch highlights a competitive shift away from headline-grabbing premium launches toward sustainable, volume-driven strategies.
